FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OREGON SYMPHONY MUSICIANS ANNOUNCE THE EIGHTH SEASON OF CLASSICAL UP CLOSE
Festival of free concerts runs from April 13 through May 3, 2020.
Portland, OR, March 9, 2020 – Classical Up Close is a festival of free chamber music concerts produced and performed by musicians of the Oregon Symphony and their friends. This festival allows Portland’s world-class musicians to perform and interact with audiences away from the formality of the downtown concert hall in a way that is casual, intimate and fun.
Over the past seven years, the festival has produced more than 80 concerts in unusual locations spanning the entire metro area. This year, performances will take place at Powell’s City of Books, Gresham High School, The German American Society, and the Multnomah County Main Library, among many others. Information about the venues, dates and times is available on their website www.classicalupclose.org.
One highlight this season is guest-artist baritone Damien Geter, who will perform with a string quartet at the Gresham High School concert on April 17. Damien is a diverse artist whose credits include performances ranging from the operatic stage (Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City) to the television screen (John Sacks on NBC's Grimm). Other highlights include the Rose City Brass Quintet (April 17), two pieces by up-and-coming local composer Andy Akiho (April 21 and May 1), and a number of Danish Folk Songs arranged for strings (April 29 and May 1).
“Classical Up Close for Kids” concerts are another highly anticipated part of the festival. These thoughtfully crafted concerts for children of all ages introduce the instruments of the orchestra in a fun and educational way. This year’s Kids’ Concerts will be April 26 at Multnomah County Central Library, and May 3 at Multnomah County Library’s Holgate location.
Classical Up Close is a classical music festival unlike any other in Portland. The audience’s experience is intimate and relaxed — allowing them to ask questions, clap between movements if they want, take pictures to share with their friends, and get to know the musicians in a way no other concert program in Portland can offer. All for free.
All Classical Portland is the official media sponsor of the 2020 Classical Up Close festival. Classical Up Close is funded in part by the Cultural Coalition of Washington County, Oregon Arts Commission, Oregon Community Foundation, Oregon Cultural Trust, Harold & Arlene Schnitzer Care Foundation, Rose E. Tucker Charitable Trust, Herbert A. Templeton Foundation, James and Linda Hamilton, Truman Collins and Walter Weyler.
