Who we are
Classical Up Close is a cooperative effort by musicians of the Oregon Symphony Orchestra (OSO) and community partners to offer free chamber music concerts — performed by musicians from the OSO and select musician friends — in venues around the Portland metro area.
In 2013, the Oregon Symphony Orchestra was scheduled to return to Carnegie Hall after a stunning success in 2011, but due to financial constraints, we were unable to make the trip. Individual members of the OSO came together to make the most of our extra week at home, with the goals of celebrating our ties to this community, thanking our supporters, and making new friends. We felt that we had a lot to celebrate and we wanted to invest in the future of this great orchestra, so we decided to travel all over the metro area with a veritable festival of informal chamber music events, guided by the credo “bringing world-class music to you, where you live, work and play.” We decided not to charge admission to these concerts as our gift to the community that sustains us, but gladly accepted donations on behalf of the Oregon Symphony Orchestra.
It was such a success, we decided to do it again in 2014 and 2015. Again, we presented concerts all over town, sometimes in places where you might not expect to see us. We were delighted to once again to meet so many music lovers in their communities! There were loyal fans from the year before and many new friends as well. As before, we set an informal tone so you would feel free to do all the things you would not normally do at a classical concert: take photos, tweet, text, clap between movements, and ask us questions. Sitting on stage with the performers continued to be popular, and the questions were as wonderful as before.
our official Media sponsor
We are very excited to announce the continued support of our official media sponsor: All Classical Portland! We can’t imagine a better partner than All Classical Portland to further our goals of celebrating great music and connecting to a wide community of music lovers in a personal and immediate way. Our festival of free concerts is designed to bring music to people where they live, work and play, and of course that is what All Classical Portland does every day, both on the radio and online.
Jack Allen, President and CEO of All Classical Portland, writes of the partnership:
We at All Classical Portland believe that if we’re serious about “building cultural community,” we must seek active partnerships with the music makers themselves. We are thrilled to become the official media sponsor of Classical Up Close, with whom we share a goal of breaking down traditional barriers to the appreciation and enjoyment of classical music, and building cultural vitality and vibrancy for our community.
All Classical Portland is Portland, Oregon’s classical radio station. Established in 1983, All Classical Portland’s mission is to advance knowledge of and appreciation for classical music; to build and sustain culturally vibrant local and global communities around this art form; to reflect the spirit of the Pacific Northwest; and to foster integrity, quality, and innovation in all that we do.
